Ancestor in the genealogy

Bitan

Bitan (Batni in Dorn's translation) is the second son of Qais in the traditional genealogy. His male line is the Bhittani tribe. Through his daughter Bibi Matu and her husband Shah Husain of Ghor come the Ghilzai, Lodi and Sarwani, known together as the Matti.

Where the sources disagree

The Makhzan-i Afghani and Caroe trace the Ghilzai and Lodi through Bibi Matu. Caroe says early tradition did not hold the Ghilzai to be of true Afghan stock, and Longworth Dames reads the story as hiding the absorption of a Tajik or Ghori element.

The genealogy follows the Makhzan-i Afghani and the Khulasat al-Ansab, as Caroe tabulates them. It records tradition: where sources place a tribe differently, the note above says so.
