Ancestor in the genealogy · Adopted into the line
Karlanri (Karlan) is the ancestor of the hill tribes from the Khyber and Tirah through Kohat, Kurram, Khost and Waziristan to Bannu. In the tradition given in Lee's copy of the Makhzan-i Afghani and in the Khulasat al-Ansab he was a foundling, taken in by a man of Ormur's tribe in exchange for an iron pot (karahi), which is said to explain the name. His sons were Kodai and Kakai.
Elphinstone makes Karlan a fourth son of Qais, and Caroe counts four lines while calling Karlanri's place uncertain; Bellew makes the Karlanri a branch of the Ghurghusht, and Rose notes that some class them as Sarbani. Rose and Raverty also record versions in which he was adopted by Urmur's family or was of Sayyid descent.
The genealogy follows the Makhzan-i Afghani and the Khulasat al-Ansab, as Caroe tabulates them. It records tradition: where sources place a tribe differently, the note above says so.
