Tribe
The Tarin are a tribe of Pishin, Duki, Shahrig, Harnai and Thal-Chotiali, with a small colony at Haripur in Hazara. In the traditional genealogy Tarin is a son of Sharkhbun and the father of Tor, Spin and Abdal, so the Durrani are reckoned a Tarin branch.
The Makhzan-i Afghani gives Tarin three sons, Tor, Spin and Abdal; the Loralai gazetteer gives four, adding Zhar and calling Abdal Bor. Encyclopaedia Iranica's article "Abdali" makes Tarin a son of Kharshbun, against every other source consulted.
Confederation · Tarin
The Abdali, later known as the Durrani, are the confederation of Kandahar, the Helmand, Farah and Herat, with a colony at Multan whose members were called Multani Pathans. In the traditional genealogy they descend from Abdal, son of Tarin. Elphinstone, Bellew and Encyclopaedia Iranica divide them into two leagues, the Zirak and the Panjpai.

The Spin (white) Tarin live in Duki, Sanjawi, Shahrig and Thal. The Makhzan-i Afghani gives Spin four sons, Duvair, Suleiman, Jam and Adhami, and the Loralai gazetteer lists the sections Wanechi, Lasiani, Marpani, Semani, Adwani and Saam.

The Tor (black) Tarin are the Tarin of Pishin. The Makhzan-i Afghani gives Tor four sons, Malmuni, Gondari, Siki and Babu, and the Loralai gazetteer names Babu's sons as Ali and Harun.
The genealogy follows the Makhzan-i Afghani and the Khulasat al-Ansab, as Caroe tabulates them. It records tradition: where sources place a tribe differently, the note above says so.
