A confederation, not a single clan
Durrani names a Pashtun tribal confederation historically known as Abdali. It includes multiple tribes and lineages rather than one undivided clan. The confederation became closely associated with the dynasty founded by Ahmad Shah in 1747 and with subsequent Afghan state history. [1]
Named groupings
Daniel Balland's scholarly account describes the Zirak and Panjpai leagues. Popalzai, Barakzai, and Alikozai are among the tribes associated with Zirak; Alizai, Ishaqzai, and Nurzai are among those associated with Panjpai. The same account cautions that league names in chronicles do not necessarily describe everyday political institutions. [1]
Genealogy and historical evidence
Traditional genealogies represent relationships through shared ancestors, but a confederation can also develop through alliances and incorporation. Genealogical tradition should be identified as tradition rather than treated as proof of biological descent. Durrani communities have lived across southern Afghanistan and beyond it; historical descriptions of their distribution or population are not current census results. [1]
