Ancestor in the genealogy
سړبن
Sarban is the eldest son of Qais in the traditional genealogy, written Sarbanni in Dorn's translation of the Makhzan-i Afghani. His sons Sharkhbun and Kharshbun are the ancestors of the western and eastern Afghans. Caroe notes that the Sarbani tribes regard themselves as the Afghans proper, and the Loralai gazetteer gives Sarban's Islamic name as Ibrahim.
The genealogy follows the Makhzan-i Afghani and the Khulasat al-Ansab, as Caroe tabulates them. It records tradition: where sources place a tribe differently, the note above says so.
