Ancestor in the genealogy
قیس عبدالرشید
Qais Abdur Rashid is the ancestor to whom the Pashtun genealogies, beginning with the 17th-century Makhzan-i Afghani, trace every tribe. He is a figure of tradition, said to have been surnamed Pathan. The Makhzan gives him three sons, Sarban, Bitan and Ghurghusht.
The Makhzan-i Afghani gives Qais three sons. Elphinstone gives four, adding Karlan (his Kurleh), and Caroe counts four lines while calling Karlanri's descent uncertain.
The genealogy follows the Makhzan-i Afghani and the Khulasat al-Ansab, as Caroe tabulates them. It records tradition: where sources place a tribe differently, the note above says so.
