The Chamkani live in north-eastern Kurram, at Kaniguram and around Peshawar. The Khulasat al-Ansab makes Chamkani a son of Ghori, and the 1910 Dictionary of the Pathan Tribes gives the clans as Khani Khel, Khwaja Khel, Bada Khel and Haji (Para) Khel.
The Khulasat al-Ansab says some hold the Chamkani to be only adopted, and Bellew also counts them as a branch of the Khugiani. Ibbetson suggests a Persian origin and the 1910 Dictionary calls them of doubtful origin.
The genealogy follows the Makhzan-i Afghani and the Khulasat al-Ansab, as Caroe tabulates them. It records tradition: where sources place a tribe differently, the note above says so.
